Soyfa Wang

Raised in Southern California, Sofya Wang’s music blurs gender norms and musical genres.

She describes herself as «an artist who also happens to be gender fluid, lesbian, and first-generation Chinese American». Her authenticity shines through in her songs with introspective lyrics that explore personal relationships, sexuality, and self-discovery.

Now Sofya Wang unveils her unique debut EP «Soyfa Wang Live in Studio». Working alongside producer and songwriting partner Kevin Lubrano and recording engineer Wil Aspach, Sofya Wang created the visual EP by performing the tracks at the EastWest studios, singing live takes for 8 hours straight in front of 3 cameras! The EP includes three original songs from Sofya Wang, including the bold «F**ked in the Head» which was written by Sofya when jamming and «simpin» for a girl. However, the EP kicks off with a stunning and fresh take on one of the most famous and beloved Chinese songs of all time, «The Moon Represents My Heart».

Sofya Wang on creating the live EP

«This series was originally inspired by this performance of ‘The Moon Represents My Heart’ that I gave at the Skirball for an Asian American Cultural event. It went well and I feel like the look was cool and you know, it’s like important for my people.. cause I gave a twist on it. I felt like I had something to say that other people like me might find important and connect to. So we decided to give that moment some permanence by making these live videos. And we included some other songs I wrote at that time».

Having taken music lessons from a young age and later becoming classically trained in piano and cello, Sofya Wang has always been musically inclined. However, Sofya discovered in middle school that she could use music to express as opposed to just playing other people’s music, so began to improvise with her own creations during practice sessions. At 17 she realised that singing and performing in front of a crowd is what felt like her true calling, despite having only ever sung in the shower! Following her gut feeling has truly paid of for Sofya, who now enjoys her own fanbase of «baby gays that I will forever be grateful for» and over a million streams on DSP’s. Sofya Wang now hopes to have her music heard far and wide while showing that there is space for Asian-Americans in the indie-rock scene.

Freely mixing pop, alt-R&B, and rock in her singles «Boys Aside» and «Found Love», Sofya Wang’s unique perspective is heard once again on this EP.
