Matthew Morgan’s «Two-Sided Town»: A Sonic Exploration of Modern Division

After the resounding success of his indie-folk album, «Timepiece», singer-songwriter Matthew Morgan is back with a captivating new single, «Two-Sided Town». This track marks a departure from Morgan’s previous work as he ventures into alternative rock territory, delving into the intricate nuances of modern societal polarisation.

Produced by the talented Brian Skeel, based in Columbus, Ohio, «Two-Sided Town» is a powerful sonic journey that showcases Morgan’s vocal prowess and his ability to craft evocative narratives. Set against a backdrop of stirring melodies and sharp percussion, the song’s waltz-like rhythm captures the listener’s attention from the very first note.

A Stark Commentary on the Current State of Affairs

The song’s lyrics offer a stark commentary on the current state of affairs, exploring themes of political and social division, the erosion of trust, and the urgent need for unity. In a time where division seems to be the prevailing narrative, Morgan’s «Two-Sided Town» serves as a reminder of the importance of coming together and finding common ground.

Matthew Morgan is on a mission to prove to the world that alternative folk can be embraced by the LGBTQIA+ community, that a singer-songwriter from the heartland can compose words expressing anti-racist sentiment, and that a great-sounding country song can carry a deeper message without relying on overused and outdated tropes.

Refusing to be labeled or pigeonholed into genderized, racialized, or any other «-ized» stereotypes, Morgan joins the ranks of similar progressive singer-songwriters such as Orville Peck, Crys Matthews, and Willy Carlisle. With his unique blend of alternative rock and folk influences, Morgan’s music breaks down barriers and challenges societal norms.

A Journey of Musical Success

Matthew Morgan released his debut CD with Chicago’s acoustic indie label, Caudog Records, in 2012. The release was followed by an extensive tour around the Midwest and southern US states, in cohort with his band, The Lost Brigade. The tour resulted in sold-out shows headlining at Chicago’s famous Double Door nightclub and House of Blues.

Opportunities to share the stage with more notorious acts at music festivals soon followed, including opening for Dave Davies (The Kinks) and Company of Thieves at Taste of Lincoln Ave (Chicago) and SXSW (Austin) in 2013. Morgan’s unique sound and powerful performances garnered attention and praise from both critics and fans alike.

With «Two-Sided Town», Matthew Morgan continues to push the boundaries of his musical exploration. This captivating single not only showcases his growth as an artist but also serves as a poignant reminder of the power of music to address important social issues. In a world filled with division, Morgan’s music offers a glimmer of hope and a call to action for unity and understanding.

«I think that a lot of people are shocked by how separated we are as a society and culture right now and I think a lot of us are wondering how much of this divide is rooted in truth and how much of it is perpetuated by the constant stream of media. Regardless, there is clearly a big disconnect and inability to communicate effectively in the US and it starts with our leaders in congress and trickles down».
